At the 2008 ALA Annual Conference, Lian Ruan presented on the Chinese Librarians Summer Programs (now, Chinese Librarians Scholarly Exchange Program) at the CALA (Chinese American Librarians Association) program entitled “Global Outreach: A U.S.-China Experience.”
In 2009, the participants of the summer librarian program attended the ALA Annual Conference, and two of them had an opportunity to give presentations for the Pre-Conference. The participants are Chunzhi, Xie, Vice Director/Associate Researcher at Wuhan University Library, China, who presented “Digitization in China’s Academic Libraries: taking the Yangtze River Repository as an Example”, and Huang Chen, Director of the Digital Library R & D Center at Zhejiang University Libraries, China, who presented “the Collection and Service of the CADAL Project”. In December 2008, the first multi-type library consortium in China, the Jilin Library Consortium, was co-founded by Director Qun Yu (2007 participant), Northeast Normal University Library, a 2008 Chinese Librarians Summer Program participant and IFSI visiting scholar. The idea was inspired by a talk given by Executive Director Anne Craig, Illinois State Library, on ILLINET, a well-known multi-type library consortium in Illinois. The establishment of the Jilin Library Consortium has made a positive impact on China's library community and was applauded by the central government leaders.
On January 14, 2010, Jinan University Library received an Elsevier Foundation grant award for a proposal entitled “Developing a Service-Oriented Database of Cases of Emergency Management.” Ruan was invited to serve as an advisor and partner for the project, having visited Jinan University Library in November 2009. In October 2010, Head Librarian Ruan joined the project report and evaluation meeting at Jinan University.
The Elsevier Foundation committed “a total of $600,000 to twelve institutions from around the world to support the work of libraries and scholars in science, technology, and medicine. The grant recipients were selected from 250 applicants worldwide for their innovation and potential for impact in the developing world, academic workplace, and nursing community.” (http://www.elsevier.com).
Most participants were promoted to leading administrative positions after they return.
